Said House Vaucluse
Darug Land
This luxury alterations and additions project in Vaucluse is defined by its strong horizontal and vertical elements expressed through stone, brick, concrete, and timber. Building upon the existing 1920s residence, the new spaces extend north and west on this corner block, progressively opening towards expansive views of Sydney Harbour from the upper level.
01
Challenges
The client, ambitious and well-travelled, sought a distinctive materiality that would mark the house as unique and expressive. The site presented constraints, with the east and west boundaries limited by the curve of the street. The challenge was to preserve the privileged views and outlook afforded by the corner location while maintaining privacy.
02
Approach
The design employs visually thick basalt-clad walls combined with large openings and subtle level changes to create a sense of calm solidity and continuity between interior and exterior. This layering effect fosters privacy while allowing precise control over connections between spaces and functions. The house is largely divided along a central circulation axis, separating the more public spaces from functional areas positioned to the south, adjacent to neighbouring properties.
03
Process / Materials
A robust palette of concrete, brick, basalt, and timber anchors the project. Working within the spatial constraints of the original 1920s dwelling, diverse living areas radiate from a central visitors’ entrance, spreading outwards on either side. A top-lit stair introduces verticality, connecting the levels. Detailed screens and adjustable louvres provide sun control and privacy, visually contrasting with the mass of the stone and masonry. Throughout, bespoke detailing and craftsmanship reflect a meticulously executed design.

Design Impact
Situated on a site defined by the sweeping curve of the street, this highly crafted building melds raw materiality with a refined orchestration of natural light. The result is a confident composition marked by rhythms of texture and the passage of time. Featuring numerous entertaining areas that flow effortlessly outdoors and commanding harbour views from Manly to Bradley’s Head, the interiors are flooded with northern light. Vaucluse exemplifies refined harbourside living, elegantly balancing the dialogue between old and new.
