This Randwick federation bungalow has been revitalised through a significant architectural renovation, emerging as a functional, modern family home that breathes life and connectivity into the space while introducing the light, energy, and practicality essential for contemporary living.

Challenges
Following an unsatisfactory renovation executed 15 years prior, the project brief called for a modest yet effective transformation to redefine how the client related to their home. Achieving success required a comprehensive rethink that leveraged the house’s northern aspect. The prior renovation had resulted in cramped, dark spaces with poor build quality, presenting multiple challenges to overcome.

Approach
Our design approach centred on a radical transformation through a full replan. Developing a close and collaborative relationship with the client was key, allowing us to fully understand their needs and aspirations for their family home. This partnership fostered mutual respect and engagement throughout the project.

Process / Materials
With the addition of an upper-level bedroom and ensuite, the house was completely reoriented, connecting key living areas physically and visually to the garden. This reconfiguration floods the home with natural light and fresh air, ensuring a renewed and enduring life for the property. Dramatic curving walls, refined interior finishes, and a curated collection of Asian art and artefacts give the renovation a distinctive character that authentically reflects the client’s personal taste.

Design Impact
Our objective was to create spaces that the family would genuinely want to inhabit and engage with. Particular emphasis was placed on the open-plan living, dining, and kitchen areas, resulting in a lively, airy, and light-filled environment. The completed renovation has successfully transformed the way the family lives within their home, demonstrating that thoughtful renovations can do more than refresh aesthetics — they can fundamentally reshape how a home functions and enrich daily living.
