Custom furniture
by DKC
For projects to feel complete and fully integrated, the selection of the detailed fixtures, fittings and furniture is essential. As architects and designers, we have a keen understanding of what good furniture brings to a project. It lends proportion, materiality and functionality to a space and centres the key activities of people, how they gather, eat, meet, sit and sleep. To achieve this, we often design bespoke pieces that are precisely tailored to the spatial and architectural context.
01
Challenges
Furniture, particularly imported products, can be a very expensive addition to the building budget. Designing bespoke pieces and having them made locally, offers not only a cost-effective solution but also introduces a layer of beautifully-made furniture that is unique, and well-adapted to the spaces we design.
02
Approach
From very early on in the design process, we are placing the furniture within the structure and interior spaces of a building, seeking to strike the right balance between the functional and aesthetic considerations of each space. Our furniture starts off from a functional perspective, ensuring it is well made and above all useful. We work with experienced local cabinet makers and craftspeople to make furniture that can last a lifetime and fits beautifully into the houses and spaces we design.
03
Process / Materials
Projects that require new or bespoke pieces of furniture have their design, manufacture and selection embedded into our design and delivery processes. We carefully test and prototype materials and details, including sample finishes, and leave nothing to chance when we create these pieces.
04
Design Impact
When a completed building is carefully furnished, it represents our completed vision. Our work at the Surf Hotel is a good example: where with tight budgets we have managed to totally integrate all the finishes, services, joinery, bespoke and production furniture and even artworks into a complete package where functional and aesthetic considerations are elegantly resolved. Whether it is houses or hotels, custom solutions such as bespoke furniture adds to the liveability and value of any property, ensuring that spaces are comfortable, functional and beautiful.
